What is a 24-hour Holter Monitor?
A 24-hour Holter Monitor is a continuous recording of your ECG for a period of 24 hours. The Holter Monitor may be used if your routine ECG is normal but your symptoms occur often. This type of monitor uses tiny compact (digital) recorders and electrodes placed in special areas of the upper chest wall. While wearing this device, you will be instructed to keep a diary of your activities and medications taken. The Holter Monitor will be placed while you are in the clinic. The Technician will provide you with complete instructions during your visit. Occasionally, 24 hours is not long enough to assess your symptoms. In this case, your physician may decide to use a “Cardiac Event Monitor”, which may be kept up to a 30-day period.
